The Boots Howell family home on St Francis Drive is now for auction. It is uniquely constructed based on a classic French Chateau design. Around a center room with 30’ ceilings held aloft by concrete columns resting on extensive wood-inlaid brick flooring was the base and forum of activities for which the Howells were noted. Designed by Millie and built by Boots, owner of the Howell construction company prominent over many generations in Philadelphia. Boots and Millie also founded, designed, and built the Philadelphia’s first Episcopal Church, located up the hill from the home.

Keeping with the artistic interest of Millie, a prominent Mississippi painter in the permanent collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art, on its walls hung one of the great art collections in the south; with pieces by George Ohr, Walter Anderson, Ida Kohlmyer, Ralston Crawford, and Kiki Smith. Boots, from a family of musicians (instrumental in starting the Philadelphia High School band), passed down to his children and grandchildren the art of music. Among these, a winner of the Mississippi Arts and Letters award in music composition, and the composer of the soundtrack to the HBO hit series “Vice Principal.” Music in the house was performed by the family, and by luminaries, such as Al Fielder (of the influential Free Jazz collective, Art Ensemble of Chicago), Tom Boros (of the Berklee College of Music), Bruno Meillier (of the French rock band, Etron Fou), and Johnny Cash sideman Marty Stuart. Documentaries, books and articles were written there, plays rehearsed and performed. (Another son co-founded Jackson’s Fondren Theatre.) Professional dancers, inventors, politicians, pilots, academicians, architects also graced the long halls of the Howell house as it became an epicenter for creative and historic events in Philadelphia during its most historically significant time.

REAL ESTATE TERMS: The successful bidder will be required to make a 10% non-refundable deposit the day of the auction.  The sale IS NOT subject to the buyer’s ability to obtain financing nor any other contingency, feasibility period, or the results of inspections or appraisals.  Should the buyer default and fail to close as specified, the buyer will forfeit their deposit, which will immediately be released to the Auction Co. / Broker.  A 10% buyer’s premium is in effect and will be added to final bid accepted, subject to Sellers Confirmation, which will establish the final contract or sales price.  Closing will be within 30 days of the auction date.  If Seller fails to close  or deliver clear title, the Auction Co. / Broker will not be responsible.  If for any reason the sale cannot be consummated because of the seller, the down payment will be refunded.  Closing costs will be paid for by the buyer.  The property is offered “AS IS – WHERE IS” with no contingencies, repairs, clean up or improvements.  Prospective buyers should inspect the property prior to sale day.  Information provided by auction co. is believed to be accurate; however, auction co. does not guarantee accuracy of the information provided.  Successful bidder will be required to sign a contract upon conclusion of the bidding.    Bidder understands and agrees that William Head and Head Auctions & Realty represents the Sellers and will not be considered an agent for the Bidder.
